What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful and progressive aliment that causes pain in the wrist area. When pressure or force is applied to the median nerve, which is located along the forearm and runs into the hand, is sends shooting pain waves through the wrist and forearm. The medium nerve is responsible for sensations felt to the palm side of the fingers and thumb – this is why thickening from inflammation of the tendons can cause pressure on the median nerve. This in turn, causes the feeling of pain which can range from mild numbness through to excruciating shooting pain.
What are the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome?
People who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome usually experience burning, itching or prickly sensation. These symptoms manifest themselves in the palm of the hand and typically start in the thumb or middle fingers.Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the middle fingers. Research has shown that a minority of sufferers will experience pain and a feeling of swelling within the fingers, although there will be no sign of swelling. The pain typically appears at night, while the person is asleep with flexed wrists. In the morning, upon waking, the person may feel the urge to clench and retract their hands to loosen them. As the condition worsens overtime, the sufferer usually feels numbness or pain during the day.
Severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome
In severe cases, the sufferer may be unable to tell the difference between hot and cold. This may lead to additional injuries such the body’s own failsafe mechanisms stop working properly. The person may hold a hot beverage and their usual response would be to put it down because it’s too hot, however, if you suffer from a severe casecarpal tunnel syndrome, you may lose sensitivity in your hands and possibly end up scalding or causing burn damage.
Also, in extreme cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may lose their strength and the sufferer will find it increasingly difficult to grasp or hold objects. This can debilitating for the sufferer as they have to rely upon the support of friends and family to undertake everyday tasks.
Symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome sufferers usually develop their symptoms over time. It starts off with numbness of the fingers, tingling in the thumbs or a dull pain in the palm of the hands. Over time the condition worsens and the symptoms get progressively worse. Your symptoms may include:
- Frequent burning & itching
- The sensation of swollen fingers (even those visibly they don’t appear to be)
- Shooting pain in the wrist and the forearm
- Muscle wastage
- Reduced sensitivity to hot and cold
Who’s at risk from developing carpal tunnel syndrome?
Research has shown that women are almost three times more likely to develop symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome; current medical opinion suggests that it may be due to the length of median nerve being shorter than that of men. People who suffer from diabetes and other metabolic conditions are more prone to developing carpal tunnel syndrome as their nerves are more susceptible to damage and trauma.
Ways to minimise the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome
The best way to reduce the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome at work is to perform stretching exercise, try to avoid repetitive movements if possible (break-up the workload by varying the activities needed to be undertaken) and take rest breaks.
What results can you expect?
Clinical studies support this method of application. It has been shown that the use of ultrasonic waves on the muscle tissue and ligaments can:
- promote healing by penetrating the skin’s surface and stimulating soft tissue
- increase blood flow to reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation
- enhance absorption of analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents by tissue below the skin
- reduce trigger point pain, the causes of headache, backache and all types of muscular/soft tissue ‘overuse’ syndromes
