Cold weather 'has no effect on arthritis'

Cold weather does not make arthritis worse, an expert has stated. In a feature for the Daily Mail, professor of musculoskeletal medicine at the University of Leeds Philip Conagahan said the claim that a drop in air pressure just before rain makes arthritis worse is unproven.
"There is no evidence to show weather or climate has any effect on arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs all over the world, in all types of climates."
The professor listed it as one of a number of myths about the condition, alongside the suggestion that acidic or fatty foods, age and jogging are all either causes of osteoarthritis or will make it worse.
At the same time, he noted is not the case that red wine can help reverse its effects.
Those who are looking for arthritis relief may find it comes from using ultrasound treatment.
While exercise is not a cause in itself of the condition, injury can be, noted Professor Conaghan and this echoed recent comments by spokesperson for Arthritis Care Jane Spence that high-impact sports could cause such problems.
