Footballer David Meyler could face surgery and a long spell on the sidelines after rupturing knee ligaments last weekend.

The Sunderland midfielder suffered the injury during the defeat by Manchester United last Sunday (May 2nd), with subsequent scans confirming the extent of the injury.

Manager Steve Bruce told the club website that the 20-year-old Irishman will be out "until at least Christmas" and possibly much longer.

He added: "It looks like a really serious injury for the kid. He's in Bradford as we speak and will be operated on [on] Friday."

The injury came after Meyler signed a new five-year contract, having made 12 appearances for the first team this season.

Those recovering from a long-term injury may find that using an ultrasound probe helps to speed up their recovery.

One person Meyler may take inspiration from is Owen Hargreaves, who returned to action for Manchester United in the same game.

The Canadian-born midfielder has been out for the best part of two seasons after having surgery on tendonitis in both knees.
