Gentle exercise advice for Paget's disease sufferers
6/5/2010
An expert on Paget's disease - a bone problem that can cause arthritis - has said those currently suffering from the condition should use gentle exercise as a way of keeping their limbs and bones as supple as possible.Chief executive of the Paget's Association Marilyn McCallum stated that sufferers "need to keep moving, nothing that would cause stress on the bone, so gentle exercise such as walking, yoga, a few gentle aerobics would be fine".
Those with arthritis caused by the disease may find that using ultrasound equipment may help ease their discomfort.
Ms McCallum was speaking in the wake of news that genes responsible for Paget's disease have been identified, which she said could lead to tests to identify potential sufferers and new gene therapies in the future to prevent it.
A study founded by Arthritis Research UK carried out at Edinburgh University discovered that three genes are responsible.
It is believed that these genes are connected with the rate at which damaged bone is repaired.
