Golf listed in top sports for injury
17/12/2009
Golf has joined a list of sporting activities that are most likely to cause injury for their participants. The game has been listed alongside, American football, rugby, skiing, bicycling and cheerleading, Paly Voice reports.
While the latter activity can be attributed to crowd-pleasing stunts involving cheerleaders that can lead to fractures - such as one being thrown through the air and not caught - golf may seem an unusual inclusion, the news provider notes.
However, it stated, there is a high incidence of strain injuries resulting from playing the sport.
These account for the problems suffered by 60 per cent of professionals and 40 per cent of amateurs each year, The American College of Sports Medicine has stated.
Golfers of all ages may wish to tackle their strain problems by using ultrasound treatment.
Back pain is the most common golfing injury, according to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Foster, about.com reports.
Dr Foster noted that other common complaints include tennis elbow and shoulder strains.
