Snake venom 'may help arthritis'

13/1/2010
Tests on snake venom have suggested that it could help produce a cure for arthritis, it has been stated.

According to Indian traditional Ayurvedic medicine, cobra venom can help with the condition and professor of physiology at the University of Calcutta Antony Gomes told Discovery News that an ointment based on the substance is in development.

"We have already prepared such an oil-based preparation (for topical application), which is showing very promising results on humans," he added.

Professor Gomes added that other snake venoms could also help with the condition.

Researchers have said that the venom impedes the breakdown of collagen, which prevents cartilage damage, the report added.

While tests continue on the development of venom-based potions, those using ultrasound treatment may find that this helps with their arthritis now.

Ayurvedic medicine, which is practiced in countries such as India and Sri Lanka, relies on various organic remedies, which includes medicines developed from plants and massage treatment.
