Sports injuries research is being undertaken by the University of Bath, amid concerns that rugby has become more dangerous in recent times.

A total of 60 rugby clubs across England are being monitored by the educational establishment and every injury sustained will be recorded.

Statistical analysis will be provided to the Rugby Football Union by the university and it is hoped that the data will allow for the identification of statistical trends in sport injuries.

The analysis is taking place following the "controversial" clarification of the tackle law by the International Rugby Board in July, the Telegraph notes. The publication explained that this has resulted in the intensification of physicality in rugby.

"It is thought that that audit will show the casualty rate in England has risen from 20-25 per cent to 30 per cent when it is published later this month," the paper concluded.
