The right shoes 'can prevent pain'

Runners who are training for an event such as the London Marathon should take care they are wearing the right footwear, according to an expert.Speaking to the Western Mail, Tom Cooper of Ace - Feet in Motion pointed out that when runners wear the wrong shoes, it is "almost inevitable" that an injury may develop.
These injuries can include hip, knee, ankle or back pain, as well as shin splints, the senior sports podiatrist said.
However, Mr Cooper commented that many people do not connect such pain with their feet and are too keen to treat the problem rather than the underlying cause.
Those who are prone to knee injuries may find running on grass to be easier on this joint than running on man-made surfaces such as pavements.
A specialised pair of running shoes, rather than fashion trainers, offers the foot greater protection against impact and plenty of cushioning for sensitive areas, such as the heel.
One way for athletes to manage pain may be to use a cheap ultrasound machine, which can help ease their discomfort.
Earlier this month, acupuncture was also recommended by Mayo Clinic doctor JD Bartleson, who noted that it can be an effective way to reduce the effects of back pain for some people.
