Walking 'good for bone health'

Going walking is a good way of improving all-round health, including the prevention of osteoporosis, it has been noted.Communications manager at Walking for Health Moira Halstead remarked that preventing strokes by lowering blood pressure is the most obvious benefit, but said there are other gains to be enjoyed.
"Walking can also help obesity - more than two thirds of women aged 55 to 74 are overweight or obese - walking can also help type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis [or] dementia," she added.
The advantage of walking is that it can be done with only a little equipment, such as good walking shoes or boots and a raincoat for inclement weather, Ms Halstead noted.
Those battling osteoporosis and hoping to stay as mobile as possible may find that using home ultrasound makes it easier for them to get out and about in the first instance.
A list of walking benefits produced by the Ramblers has also noted that the activity can combat obesity, prevent some types of cancer and help avoid heart disease.
